giving up

It’s something you have to do from time to time.

I’ve given up many things in my life, I could write for you about giving up things, I could.

Tea and Biscuits – Apparently as a very small child my two grandmothers fed me with tea with much sugar and biscuits. I do not remember this, but I hate (black) tea and dislike biscuits.

Sweetener and Sugar – As a child I had a very sweet tooth, but as a young man I decided to give up sugar in my coffee (three heaped spoonfuls). I bought some sweetener tablets – funny taste – after a week I gave up the sweeteners – they were awful – sugar was just as bad.

Pyjamas – I was living in a friend’s apartment in London when he was on vacation; yes, he was American. He came back early and made fun of my over-large Marks & Spencers pyjamas. I never wore pyjamas again.

Smoking – My father died and my wife said that she would not buy me any more cigarettes; she continued to smoke. I only smoked even-numbered months, but gave them up I did.

Eating – My department leader insisted, we all had to have lunch with him in the Bundeswehrkantine on the sixteenth floor (lovely view). The main dish was meat and 2 veg. I can only remember the potatoes, they had very soft and very hard parts – they were unripe or bad. It was the first time and last time that I visited this canteen, but fortunately I did not give up eating.

Spargel – One day I discovered that I really disliked white asparagus – it was expensive and tasted of old piss. I thought of training it to jump out of the bin, I gave it up.

Alcohol – I was walking around a supermarket when I put out a hand to grab a 6‑pack of wine when a small but strident voice inside me said “Don’t do that!” and I didn’t. I drink alcohol just at Xmas and Easter.

Eating – The same committee inside me that cut my alcohol intake had decided that I was eating too much. They throttled my intake without telling me. And I lost 20 kilo in six months. Quite healthy, but my doctor was not happy, was some cancer inside me eating up my internal organs? I had blood tests, ultrasonic tests, scans, a colonoscopy for my guts, a Gastroscopy for my stomach, and more. Apparently I’m still alive.

You can’t like everything, if you like every thing you have no taste at all.
